Federal Public Defender

Eastern District of Virginia



            The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit is now accepting applications for the position of Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia. The term of appointment is four years, with an annual salary not to exceed $142,000.


            The Federal Public Defender, functioning under the authority of 18 U.S.C. Section 3006A(h)(1)(A) and the Criminal Justice Act Plan of the District, provides criminal defense services to individuals unable to afford counsel. In addition, the Federal Public Defender supervises a staff of lawyers and support personnel. The office has locations in Alexandria, Richmond and Norfolk.


            Applicants must be a member in good standing of the Virginia Bar or the Bar of the state in which they are currently admitted to practice. A minimum of five years criminal practice, preferably with significant federal criminal trial experience, the ability to effectively administer the office, a reputation for integrity, and a commitment to the representation of those unable to afford counsel are qualities which are sought for this position. The final candidate will be subject to a full background investigation and appropriate financial disclosure regulations. The Federal Public Defender may not engage in the private practice of law.
